Rivers Could Provide Huge Amounts of Clean Energy

Have you ever wondered what happens when a river hits the sea? Apparently, energy can be produced from this! The fresh water of the river smashes the salty water of the sea, resulting in a certain amount of energy.

In the relentless search for alternative sources of energy, the man’s mind has thought about capturing this energy and using it for his own benefit.

How? When the river water comes into contact with the sea water, temperature rises in a small degree. The two types of water have a membrane that separates them; the river water is pulled towards the sea water through this membrane, which accounts for a rise in pressure.

That particular energy is being captured using osmotic power, which is a relatively new energy conversion concept. What do we do with it? Well, that’s entirely up to us – to power a turbine is just one example.

The problem with the osmotic power is the sheer size of the membrane. Researchers from Stanford University have approached this inconvenient with a plan: they are testing a crystal lattice of manganese dioxide nanorods to see if they can just pull energy through it with the help of a battery. I guess that’s more to come from the science of alternative energy!
